Dental treatment in China from Switzerland — The country where basic insurance covers your teeth least — by law, not by accident.

Switzerland is the clearest case in Europe, because the exclusion is explicit rather than incidental. Under compulsory basic insurance (LAMal/KVG), the Federal Office of Public Health states that the costs of dental treatment are generally not covered. Reimbursement happens only where treatment is necessitated by a serious, non-preventable disease of the masticatory system, or by a serious non-dental condition or its sequelae.

What makes this different from a coverage gap elsewhere is that the exceptions are a closed list. Federal Supreme Court rulings have confirmed that the conditions capable of triggering coverage are exhaustively enumerated in Articles 17 to 19 of the Health Insurance Benefits Ordinance (KLV/OPAS). If your situation is not on that list, there is no discretionary route in. Routine and restorative dentistry in Switzerland is handled through supplementary insurance, which is private insurance regulated by FINMA rather than part of the compulsory system.

Getting there

One structural point shapes every Europe-to-China itinerary right now. European airlines cannot overfly Russia and Chinese airlines can, which makes the same route cheaper and roughly an hour shorter for a Chinese carrier. The result is that Chinese carriers now hold around 83% of China-Europe capacity, and several European airlines — SAS, LOT and Virgin Atlantic among them — have withdrawn from mainland China altogether. In practice that means the direct options into Shanghai are mostly Chinese-operated, schedules have changed repeatedly since 2022, and you should check current timetables rather than assume last year's route still runs.

What dental care costs you at home

Basic compulsory insurance operates a closed catalogue: services not on the positive list are not covered and insurers need not reimburse them. Dental sits outside that catalogue except for the enumerated serious-illness cases. Anything else — crowns, bridges, implants, veneers — is paid privately or through supplementary cover you bought in advance, with whatever ceilings and waiting periods that policy carries.

What fits a 30-day stay

• Veneers — typically two visits about a week apart, comfortably inside a 30-day stay.
• Full-arch implant treatment with immediate-load provisional teeth — the surgical stage and provisionals fit; the final prosthesis needs a second trip months later.
• Crowns and onlays, where the laboratory stage is the constraint rather than healing.
• Examination, imaging and a written treatment plan you can take home.

What does not fit

A single implant is the common misunderstanding. The implant has to fuse with the bone before the crown goes on, and that takes months, not days — so a single implant cannot be started and finished in one trip regardless of how long your entry permits. Orthodontics is the same problem at a larger scale: it needs review appointments over roughly two years, which realistically only works if you live in China.
