Dental treatment in China from Sweden — Your high-cost protection is real. The gap is what sits above the reference price.

Sweden has the strongest large-case protection of any country on this site, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. From the year you turn 20 you pay for dental care, supported by the state scheme: an allmänt tandvårdsbidrag of SEK 300 a year for most adults (SEK 600 for ages 20–23 and from the pension reference age, currently 67), and — the part that matters for a big case — högkostnadsskydd reimbursing 50% of costs above SEK 3,000 and 85% of the portion above SEK 15,000, on 2026 figures, within a one-year reimbursement period.

For a large restorative case that 85% band does most of the work, and a Swedish patient should calculate it before considering anything else. The genuine gap is elsewhere: TLV sets reference prices for the measures included in the scheme, but pricing is free, so a dentist may charge above the reference price. You pay that difference yourself and receive no support for it. On a high-value case with materials and laboratory work priced well above reference, the unsupported portion is where the real exposure sits.

Getting there

SAS withdrew from mainland China entirely, so Stockholm has no home-carrier direct service and itineraries generally connect via another European hub or fly a Chinese carrier. One structural point shapes every Europe-to-China itinerary right now. European airlines cannot overfly Russia and Chinese airlines can, which makes the same route cheaper and roughly an hour shorter for a Chinese carrier. The result is that Chinese carriers now hold around 83% of China-Europe capacity, and several European airlines — SAS, LOT and Virgin Atlantic among them — have withdrawn from mainland China altogether. In practice that means the direct options into Shanghai are mostly Chinese-operated, schedules have changed repeatedly since 2022, and you should check current timetables rather than assume last year's route still runs.

What dental care costs you at home

Sweden was added to China's unilateral visa-free list with effect from 10 November 2025, so the entry side is recent — worth mentioning because older Swedish-language travel guidance still describes a visa requirement. Before comparing anything, ask your dentist for the treatment cost against TLV reference prices and calculate your högkostnadsskydd position; if the case sits close to reference pricing, the Swedish scheme is likely to be the better answer.

What fits a 30-day stay

• Veneers — typically two visits about a week apart, comfortably inside a 30-day stay.
• Full-arch implant treatment with immediate-load provisional teeth — the surgical stage and provisionals fit; the final prosthesis needs a second trip months later.
• Crowns and onlays, where the laboratory stage is the constraint rather than healing.
• Examination, imaging and a written treatment plan you can take home.

What does not fit

A single implant is the common misunderstanding. The implant has to fuse with the bone before the crown goes on, and that takes months, not days — so a single implant cannot be started and finished in one trip regardless of how long your entry permits. Orthodontics is the same problem at a larger scale: it needs review appointments over roughly two years, which realistically only works if you live in China.
