Dental treatment in China from Spain — The public system treats the emergency. The regulation excludes the rebuild.

Spanish adults are covered for acute dental problems and very little else. Dental care sits in section 9 of Annex II of Real Decreto 1030/2006, and for adults it is confined to acute processes: infections and inflammation, dental and bone trauma, wounds and lesions of the oral mucosa, acute temporomandibular joint problems — plus oral health advice, medication, extractions including surgical extractions, minor oral surgery, and screening for premalignant lesions with biopsy where indicated.

The exclusions are stated as explicitly as the inclusions, and they cover exactly what a restorative case needs. Orthodontic treatment, extraction of healthy teeth, purely aesthetic treatment and dental implants are excluded — implants are financed only for patients with oral cancer involving tooth loss and for patients with congenital malformations presenting with anodontia. Prosthetics and restorative treatment for adults are not part of the common service portfolio at all.

Getting there

One structural point shapes every Europe-to-China itinerary right now. European airlines cannot overfly Russia and Chinese airlines can, which makes the same route cheaper and roughly an hour shorter for a Chinese carrier. The result is that Chinese carriers now hold around 83% of China-Europe capacity, and several European airlines — SAS, LOT and Virgin Atlantic among them — have withdrawn from mainland China altogether. In practice that means the direct options into Shanghai are mostly Chinese-operated, schedules have changed repeatedly since 2022, and you should check current timetables rather than assume last year's route still runs.

What dental care costs you at home

The portfolio is being widened, but not in this direction. In July 2025 the Council of Ministers approved a further €68.058 million to extend the common oral-health portfolio, bringing the 2022–2025 total to €248.232 million. The priority groups are children aged 0–14, pregnant women, patients with cervicofacial cancer, people with a disability rating of 33% or above, and — new in 2025 — progressive inclusion of people over 65. A working-age adult needing crowns or implants remains outside it, which is why the Ministry's own analysis notes that excluded services produce a social-class bias in access.

What fits a 30-day stay

• Veneers — typically two visits about a week apart, comfortably inside a 30-day stay.
• Full-arch implant treatment with immediate-load provisional teeth — the surgical stage and provisionals fit; the final prosthesis needs a second trip months later.
• Crowns and onlays, where the laboratory stage is the constraint rather than healing.
• Examination, imaging and a written treatment plan you can take home.

What does not fit

A single implant is the common misunderstanding. The implant has to fuse with the bone before the crown goes on, and that takes months, not days — so a single implant cannot be started and finished in one trip regardless of how long your entry permits. Orthodontics is the same problem at a larger scale: it needs review appointments over roughly two years, which realistically only works if you live in China.
