Dental treatment in China from Norway — Adults pay for their own teeth — Helsenorge says so in as many words.

Norway states the rule without hedging: adults over the age of 18 must pay for dental treatment themselves, and expenses for adult dental treatment are not normally refunded by the state. Free care at public clinics runs to 18, excluding orthodontics; young adults from 19 to 28 in the year of treatment pay 25% of the standard rate; people in institutions or receiving home nursing for more than three months are treated free.

Beyond that, the National Insurance Scheme covers part of the cost through Helfo across fifteen benefit categories — occupational tooth injury recognised by Nav, tooth damage from a non-occupational accident, inability to care for oneself due to permanent illness or disability, tooth loss with no remaining teeth in the lower jaw, among others. Your dentist assesses whether you fall into one. Two practical catches: the provider must have a direct settlement arrangement with Helfo, and Helfo pays fixed rates while dentists are not bound by price restrictions, so you pay the difference even when a category applies.

Getting there

One structural point shapes every Europe-to-China itinerary right now. European airlines cannot overfly Russia and Chinese airlines can, which makes the same route cheaper and roughly an hour shorter for a Chinese carrier. The result is that Chinese carriers now hold around 83% of China-Europe capacity, and several European airlines — SAS, LOT and Virgin Atlantic among them — have withdrawn from mainland China altogether. In practice that means the direct options into Shanghai are mostly Chinese-operated, schedules have changed repeatedly since 2022, and you should check current timetables rather than assume last year's route still runs.

What dental care costs you at home

Note one thing before assuming treatment abroad falls outside the system entirely: people entitled to benefits in Norway may be reimbursed for equivalent treatment within the EU/EEA, with documentation submitted to Helfo within six months. China is not in the EEA, so that route does not apply here — if EEA reimbursement would cover your case, compare that option properly first.

What fits a 30-day stay

• Veneers — typically two visits about a week apart, comfortably inside a 30-day stay.
• Full-arch implant treatment with immediate-load provisional teeth — the surgical stage and provisionals fit; the final prosthesis needs a second trip months later.
• Crowns and onlays, where the laboratory stage is the constraint rather than healing.
• Examination, imaging and a written treatment plan you can take home.

What does not fit

A single implant is the common misunderstanding. The implant has to fuse with the bone before the crown goes on, and that takes months, not days — so a single implant cannot be started and finished in one trip regardless of how long your entry permits. Orthodontics is the same problem at a larger scale: it needs review appointments over roughly two years, which realistically only works if you live in China.
