Dental treatment in China from the Netherlands — Covered until 18, then out of the basic package entirely.

The Dutch rule is unusually clean and unusually abrupt: oral care for children under 18 is largely covered by the basisverzekering, and from 18 onward most of it is not. Zorginstituut Nederland states it plainly — once you are 18, most oral care falls outside the basic package, including the periodic check-up.

A short list survives into adulthood: surgical dental care, X-rays, and removable dentures, plus special dental care where a serious condition makes chewing nearly impossible. Even there you pay a statutory own contribution — 25% for a removable full denture, 10% for an implant-supported full lower denture and 8% for the upper, 10% for repairs — on top of the compulsory eigen risico. A conventional orthodontic brace is not covered at all. Everything else runs through aanvullende verzekering, where the ceiling is set by the policy you happened to buy.

Getting there

One structural point shapes every Europe-to-China itinerary right now. European airlines cannot overfly Russia and Chinese airlines can, which makes the same route cheaper and roughly an hour shorter for a Chinese carrier. The result is that Chinese carriers now hold around 83% of China-Europe capacity, and several European airlines — SAS, LOT and Virgin Atlantic among them — have withdrawn from mainland China altogether. In practice that means the direct options into Shanghai are mostly Chinese-operated, schedules have changed repeatedly since 2022, and you should check current timetables rather than assume last year's route still runs.

What dental care costs you at home

The Zorginstituut is currently advising the Ministry of Health on whether adult oral care should re-enter the basic package — an October 2024 report costed five scenarios — so this may change. As things stand, the original reasoning was that dental costs are foreseeable and can reasonably be borne privately, which is precisely the position an adult facing a full-arch case finds themselves testing.

What fits a 30-day stay

• Veneers — typically two visits about a week apart, comfortably inside a 30-day stay.
• Full-arch implant treatment with immediate-load provisional teeth — the surgical stage and provisionals fit; the final prosthesis needs a second trip months later.
• Crowns and onlays, where the laboratory stage is the constraint rather than healing.
• Examination, imaging and a written treatment plan you can take home.

What does not fit

A single implant is the common misunderstanding. The implant has to fuse with the bone before the crown goes on, and that takes months, not days — so a single implant cannot be started and finished in one trip regardless of how long your entry permits. Orthodontics is the same problem at a larger scale: it needs review appointments over roughly two years, which realistically only works if you live in China.

Dutch adults whose aanvullende verzekering caps out early in a large restorative case, and who would otherwise pay the balance in full.
