Dental treatment in China from Italy — Public dentistry exists for children and for the seriously ill. Otherwise it is private.

Italian public dental provision is narrow by design. Under the LEA framework, SSN dental care is limited to two things: oral health programmes for the developmental age, defined as 0 to 14, and dental and prosthetic care for specific categories of people in conditions of particular vulnerability. There is no general adult entitlement.

Health vulnerability is defined by category, and the categories are serious: patients awaiting or following transplant (corneal excepted), severe immunodeficiency, cyanotic congenital heart disease, oncological and haematological patients under radiotherapy or chemotherapy, severe haemophilia and other serious congenital or acquired coagulation disorders. Even for these patients, the guarantee covers the services in the outpatient specialist nomenclature with prosthetic appliances and aesthetic work expressly excluded. Social vulnerability — low income, marginality — is assessed regionally, typically via ISEE, which produces wide variation between regions in who qualifies for what.

Getting there

One structural point shapes every Europe-to-China itinerary right now. European airlines cannot overfly Russia and Chinese airlines can, which makes the same route cheaper and roughly an hour shorter for a Chinese carrier. The result is that Chinese carriers now hold around 83% of China-Europe capacity, and several European airlines — SAS, LOT and Virgin Atlantic among them — have withdrawn from mainland China altogether. In practice that means the direct options into Shanghai are mostly Chinese-operated, schedules have changed repeatedly since 2022, and you should check current timetables rather than assume last year's route still runs.

What dental care costs you at home

For most Italian adults the practical position is that dentistry is a private purchase, with regional schemes filling gaps unevenly. Worth noting when planning travel: Chinese carriers have reportedly reached a 100% share of China traffic in the Italian market as European airlines withdrew, so schedule checking matters more here than most places.

What fits a 30-day stay

• Veneers — typically two visits about a week apart, comfortably inside a 30-day stay.
• Full-arch implant treatment with immediate-load provisional teeth — the surgical stage and provisionals fit; the final prosthesis needs a second trip months later.
• Crowns and onlays, where the laboratory stage is the constraint rather than healing.
• Examination, imaging and a written treatment plan you can take home.

What does not fit

A single implant is the common misunderstanding. The implant has to fuse with the bone before the crown goes on, and that takes months, not days — so a single implant cannot be started and finished in one trip regardless of how long your entry permits. Orthodontics is the same problem at a larger scale: it needs review appointments over roughly two years, which realistically only works if you live in China.
