Dental treatment in China from Ireland — One exam and a cleaning a year. Everything structural is yours.

Ireland's PRSI Treatment Benefit is real but deliberately small. For insured workers, the self-employed and retired people with sufficient contributions, the Department of Social Protection pays the full cost of one oral examination per calendar year, including any necessary intra-oral radiographs, plus €50 towards a scale and polish once a year — €42 towards periodontal treatment where clinically necessary — with the patient's share of a scale and polish capped at €15. Citizens Information records the €50 rate as applying from 31 January 2026. Treatment must be with a dentist on the approved panel.

What the scheme does not do is contribute to restorative work. There is no PRSI benefit towards crowns, bridges, implants or veneers. Medical Card holders get a separate and somewhat broader package through the HSE — a free annual exam, needed extractions, one first-stage root canal a year for front teeth, two fillings a year, an annual scale and polish — but again nothing towards prosthetics.

Getting there

Ireland is one of the places where the airspace effect bites hardest: with European carriers barred from Russian airspace and several having withdrawn from mainland China altogether, direct options from Dublin are limited and have changed repeatedly. Most itineraries route through a larger European or Middle Eastern hub, or through London. Check current schedules rather than assuming a route still operates. One structural point shapes every Europe-to-China itinerary right now. European airlines cannot overfly Russia and Chinese airlines can, which makes the same route cheaper and roughly an hour shorter for a Chinese carrier. The result is that Chinese carriers now hold around 83% of China-Europe capacity, and several European airlines — SAS, LOT and Virgin Atlantic among them — have withdrawn from mainland China altogether. In practice that means the direct options into Shanghai are mostly Chinese-operated, schedules have changed repeatedly since 2022, and you should check current timetables rather than assume last year's route still runs.

What dental care costs you at home

Dental Benefit may also be paid for examinations carried out in other EU member states, which is worth knowing but does not extend to China. For anything beyond examination and cleaning, Irish adults are in the private market, and there is no statutory subsidy scaling with the size of the case.

What fits a 30-day stay

• Veneers — typically two visits about a week apart, comfortably inside a 30-day stay.
• Full-arch implant treatment with immediate-load provisional teeth — the surgical stage and provisionals fit; the final prosthesis needs a second trip months later.
• Crowns and onlays, where the laboratory stage is the constraint rather than healing.
• Examination, imaging and a written treatment plan you can take home.

What does not fit

A single implant is the common misunderstanding. The implant has to fuse with the bone before the crown goes on, and that takes months, not days — so a single implant cannot be started and finished in one trip regardless of how long your entry permits. Orthodontics is the same problem at a larger scale: it needs review appointments over roughly two years, which realistically only works if you live in China.
