Dental treatment in China from Germany — The Festzuschuss is fixed to the finding, not to the treatment you choose.

Germany does not reimburse a percentage of your dental bill. Statutory insurance pays a Festzuschuss — a fixed subsidy attached to the dental finding, set annually by the Gemeinsamer Bundesausschuss across a catalogue of roughly fifty findings. The base subsidy is 60% of the amount set for the Regelversorgung, the standard care defined for that finding. A Bonusheft documenting a check-up in each of the five years before treatment raises it to 70%, and ten uninterrupted years raises it to 75%.

The consequence matters more than the percentages. Because the subsidy is tied to the finding rather than to your choice of treatment, choosing something other than the defined standard care — an implant instead of a bridge, for instance — does not increase what the insurer pays. The KZBV describes exactly this case: the implant spares healthy neighbouring teeth but costs more, and since the Festzuschüsse do not change, the patient's share of the total is markedly higher. For first-time implant care the entitlement is calculated on the finding as it stood before the implants were placed, and the additional work is billed under the private GOZ schedule.

One structural point shapes every Europe-to-China itinerary right now. European airlines cannot overfly Russia and Chinese airlines can, which makes the same route cheaper and roughly an hour shorter for a Chinese carrier. The result is that Chinese carriers now hold around 83% of China-Europe capacity, and several European airlines — SAS, LOT and Virgin Atlantic among them — have withdrawn from mainland China altogether. In practice that means the direct options into Shanghai are mostly Chinese-operated, schedules have changed repeatedly since 2022, and you should check current timetables rather than assume last year's route still runs.

What dental care costs you at home

Your practice submits an electronic Heil- und Kostenplan and the insurer must review, approve and fix the subsidy before treatment starts, with approval valid six months. That plan is the document worth having in hand before you compare anything: it states what your insurer will actually pay for your specific findings, which makes any comparison concrete rather than hypothetical. New Festzuschuss amounts took effect on 1 January 2026, so older euro figures circulating online are out of date.

What fits a 30-day stay

• Veneers — typically two visits about a week apart, comfortably inside a 30-day stay.
• Full-arch implant treatment with immediate-load provisional teeth — the surgical stage and provisionals fit; the final prosthesis needs a second trip months later.
• Crowns and onlays, where the laboratory stage is the constraint rather than healing.
• Examination, imaging and a written treatment plan you can take home.

What does not fit

A single implant is the common misunderstanding. The implant has to fuse with the bone before the crown goes on, and that takes months, not days — so a single implant cannot be started and finished in one trip regardless of how long your entry permits. Orthodontics is the same problem at a larger scale: it needs review appointments over roughly two years, which realistically only works if you live in China.

Best for

Germans whose plan involves implants or other andersartige Versorgung, where the Festzuschuss stays flat while the bill does not. If your case is standard care, the German subsidy already does most of the work.
