Dental treatment in China from Denmark — A percentage off the basics, nothing towards the rebuild.

Denmark subsidises adult dentistry rather than covering it. Adults over 18 pay for examination and treatment at a private practising dentist, with a partial public subsidy deducted automatically from the bill before you pay — either a percentage of the price or a fixed amount depending on the treatment. For regular examinations the subsidy is 65% for ages 22 to 25 and 40% from age 26.

The scope is basic care. Citizens aged 22 and over are entitled to a regional subsidy at a dentist or hygienist holding a regional provider number, covering examination, X-rays, prevention, scaling, fillings, root canal treatment, periodontitis treatment, tissue samples, extraction and surgery. Dentists set their own prices for some treatment types, and in sikringsgruppe 2 you pay the difference yourself where the price exceeds the regional subsidy. Additional help is targeted: a helbredstillæg for pensioners and pre-2003 disability pensioners with limited income and assets, and special regional subsidies for defined groups such as cancer patients with documented dental problems after radiotherapy or chemotherapy.

Getting there

SAS withdrew from mainland China entirely, so Copenhagen no longer has a home-carrier direct option and most itineraries connect through another European hub or run on a Chinese carrier. One structural point shapes every Europe-to-China itinerary right now. European airlines cannot overfly Russia and Chinese airlines can, which makes the same route cheaper and roughly an hour shorter for a Chinese carrier. The result is that Chinese carriers now hold around 83% of China-Europe capacity, and several European airlines — SAS, LOT and Virgin Atlantic among them — have withdrawn from mainland China altogether. In practice that means the direct options into Shanghai are mostly Chinese-operated, schedules have changed repeatedly since 2022, and you should check current timetables rather than assume last year's route still runs.

What dental care costs you at home

What the subsidy list does not include is the part that costs the most: crowns, bridges, implants and other prosthetic work sit outside the basic subsidised package for adults, which is where a large case does its damage.

What fits a 30-day stay

• Veneers — typically two visits about a week apart, comfortably inside a 30-day stay.
• Full-arch implant treatment with immediate-load provisional teeth — the surgical stage and provisionals fit; the final prosthesis needs a second trip months later.
• Crowns and onlays, where the laboratory stage is the constraint rather than healing.
• Examination, imaging and a written treatment plan you can take home.

What does not fit

A single implant is the common misunderstanding. The implant has to fuse with the bone before the crown goes on, and that takes months, not days — so a single implant cannot be started and finished in one trip regardless of how long your entry permits. Orthodontics is the same problem at a larger scale: it needs review appointments over roughly two years, which realistically only works if you live in China.
