Dental treatment in China from Belgium — Reimbursement depends on whether you went last year. Implants depend on much more.

Belgium runs a mechanism most countries do not: the trajet de soins buccaux. From age 19, people who saw a dentist in the previous calendar year — with care reimbursed by the compulsory insurance — are reimbursed better for most dental care than people who did not. It applies automatically. For a patient without the intervention majorée who missed the previous year, INAMI describes the patient's share of fillings, root treatments, extractions, emergency supplements and prosthetic work as roughly doubling; removable prosthetics rise by about €50 and oral implants by €40.50.

Implants are not excluded outright, which distinguishes Belgium from Austria or Spain, but they are conditional. Only implants meeting all the conditions of Article 6, §5bis 3) to 6) qualify for intervention, the nomenclature provides for placement of an osseointegrated implant, abutment, bar or full bridge from the 18th birthday, and a separate regime covers complex dental restoration for patients with cancer, anodontia or oligodontia. INAMI's own national dental commission acknowledges that the reimbursements provided do not cover the population's full dental care needs and that the sector suffers a structural funding shortfall.

Getting there

One structural point shapes every Europe-to-China itinerary right now. European airlines cannot overfly Russia and Chinese airlines can, which makes the same route cheaper and roughly an hour shorter for a Chinese carrier. The result is that Chinese carriers now hold around 83% of China-Europe capacity, and several European airlines — SAS, LOT and Virgin Atlantic among them — have withdrawn from mainland China altogether. In practice that means the direct options into Shanghai are mostly Chinese-operated, schedules have changed repeatedly since 2022, and you should check current timetables rather than assume last year's route still runs.

What dental care costs you at home

Because Belgian reimbursement is conditional in several directions at once — regular attendance, intervention majorée status, and the Article 6 implant conditions — the only reliable comparison is your mutualité's statement of what it will pay in your specific case. Get that first; it makes any comparison with treatment abroad concrete rather than notional.

What fits a 30-day stay

• Veneers — typically two visits about a week apart, comfortably inside a 30-day stay.
• Full-arch implant treatment with immediate-load provisional teeth — the surgical stage and provisionals fit; the final prosthesis needs a second trip months later.
• Crowns and onlays, where the laboratory stage is the constraint rather than healing.
• Examination, imaging and a written treatment plan you can take home.

What does not fit

A single implant is the common misunderstanding. The implant has to fuse with the bone before the crown goes on, and that takes months, not days — so a single implant cannot be started and finished in one trip regardless of how long your entry permits. Orthodontics is the same problem at a larger scale: it needs review appointments over roughly two years, which realistically only works if you live in China.

Best for

Belgian patients whose implant plan falls outside the Article 6 conditions, or who broke the annual attendance chain and face the roughly doubled patient share.
