Dental treatment in China from Austria — The e-card covers the drilling. It does not cover what goes back in.

Austria draws an unusually sharp line down the middle of dentistry. Present your e-card at a contracted dentist and the ÖGK covers the tariffed cost of contract services in full — fillings, root canal treatment, extractions, apicoectomies. That is genuinely good coverage for conservative and surgical work.

Fixed prosthetics are the other side of the line. The ÖGK classes crowns, bridge units, cast post-and-cores and implants as festsitzender Zahnersatz, which is in principle a private service with freely set prices and, in principle, no cost subsidy. On implants the wording is blunt: implants are not among the ÖGK's benefits and are therefore to be paid privately. Exceptions exist — a subsidy where removable prosthetics are medically impossible, with cleft lip and palate and extreme jaw conditions given as examples, subject to approval by the dental service — and there is an income-assessed Unterstützungsfonds you can apply to. Neither is a general entitlement.

Getting there

One structural point shapes every Europe-to-China itinerary right now. European airlines cannot overfly Russia and Chinese airlines can, which makes the same route cheaper and roughly an hour shorter for a Chinese carrier. The result is that Chinese carriers now hold around 83% of China-Europe capacity, and several European airlines — SAS, LOT and Virgin Atlantic among them — have withdrawn from mainland China altogether. In practice that means the direct options into Shanghai are mostly Chinese-operated, schedules have changed repeatedly since 2022, and you should check current timetables rather than assume last year's route still runs.

What dental care costs you at home

If you use a Wahlzahnarzt rather than a contracted dentist, you pay the invoice yourself and claim back 80% of the tariff cost — not 80% of the invoice, which is the distinction that catches people out on larger bills. Where implants are approved as exceptions, the ÖGK applies technical minimums: diameter above 3 mm and generally 10 mm length, 8 mm accepted where vertical bone is limited; one-piece and mini implants of 1.8–3 mm are not paid for.

What fits a 30-day stay

• Veneers — typically two visits about a week apart, comfortably inside a 30-day stay.
• Full-arch implant treatment with immediate-load provisional teeth — the surgical stage and provisionals fit; the final prosthesis needs a second trip months later.
• Crowns and onlays, where the laboratory stage is the constraint rather than healing.
• Examination, imaging and a written treatment plan you can take home.

What does not fit

A single implant is the common misunderstanding. The implant has to fuse with the bone before the crown goes on, and that takes months, not days — so a single implant cannot be started and finished in one trip regardless of how long your entry permits. Orthodontics is the same problem at a larger scale: it needs review appointments over roughly two years, which realistically only works if you live in China.
