Can you get Invisalign or braces in China as an adult — and is it worth it? Yes, and often at a significant saving: clear-aligner courses are commonly reported at roughly ¥15,000–¥40,000 all-in, with strong domestic aligner brands undercutting the global Invisalign brand, and conventional braces cheaper still. The catch is time, not money. Orthodontics is a months-to-years commitment with regular reviews, so the real question for a foreigner is not “how cheap” but “does my life keep me near the clinic often enough”. This guide covers who adult orthodontics suits, the realistic visit schedule, costs, and how to choose. None of this is medical advice — only an orthodontist who has examined you can tell you what your case needs.

What adult orthodontics is — and who it’s for

Orthodontics straightens teeth and corrects bites using either clear aligners (Invisalign and its competitors — removable transparent trays changed every week or two) or fixed braces (brackets and wires, in metal or less-visible ceramic). Adults are treated routinely; the main adult-specific caveats are that gum health must be sorted first and severe bite problems may need more than aligners can deliver.

It’s for you if your teeth are healthy but crooked, crowded or gappy, and you can commit to the schedule. It’s not the tool for a single discoloured or chipped tooth — that’s usually veneer or crown territory — and missing teeth are a different conversation entirely, covered in our pillar guide to dental implants in China.

The China angle: a huge market, big brands and local ones

China has one of the world’s largest orthodontic markets, and that shows up in two useful ways. First, availability: tier-1-city clinics offer the global Invisalign (隐适美) brand alongside domestic aligner systems — Angelalign (时代天使) is the best-known Chinese brand, and clinic-affiliated systems such as SmilesMore are common. Second, price competition: domestic brands exist precisely to undercut imported aligners, which is a large part of why Chinese aligner pricing sits below typical Western quotes.

Quality follows the clinician more than the brand. An aligner is a manufactured plastic tray; the diagnosis, the staging of tooth movements and the monitoring are the medicine. Vet the orthodontist and the clinic — our guide to finding an English-speaking dentist in China applies in full here.

The process — and how many visits it really takes

This is the section to read twice if you don’t live in China.

  1. Consultation, X-rays and 3D scan — one visit. You’ll usually see a simulated result and get options quoted.
  2. Plan approval and manufacturing — aligner sets or braces are prepared; typically a short wait.
  3. Fitting and start — one visit to fit braces or receive your first aligner sets with instructions.
  4. Reviews — the long tail. Fixed braces need in-person adjustments roughly every 4–10 weeks for the whole course. Aligner reviews can be spaced further apart because clinics can dispense several tray stages at once, and some offer app-based remote monitoring between visits.
  5. Refinements and retention — most courses end with refinement trays or adjustments, then retainers, with occasional follow-up.

The honest travel maths: a course commonly runs 12–36 months. That makes orthodontics well suited to expats living in China and workable for frequent visitors on an aligner system with remote monitoring — and poorly suited to fly-in, fly-out treatment. If a clinic tells you a full course can be compressed into a couple of visits, treat that as a red flag, not a convenience.

What it costs in China

The figures below are reported reference ranges, not quotes. Full-course price should include refinements, retainers and reviews — confirm what’s in and what’s extra, in writing.

Invisalign (global brand)commonly toward the upper end of that range

Real listed prices: among China Medical Journey’s Shanghai dental partner clinics in 2026, SmilesMore clear aligners were listed from around ¥19,958 at 摩尔口腔 (Moore) and entry-level clear-aligner courses from around ¥3,360 at 上海博厚口腔 (Bohou) — promotional, case-dependent rates listed by the clinics themselves, not CMJ-negotiated prices. Simple cases sit near entry pricing; complex cases don’t. Our Shanghai dental guide covers these partner clinics in detail.

How to choose a clinic for orthodontics

  • Ask who plans the case — an orthodontist (specialist) or a general dentist using the aligner company’s default plan. For anything beyond mild crowding, specialist planning is worth it.
  • Get the full-course price in writing — including refinements, retainers, and what happens if treatment overruns.
  • Confirm the review logistics — how often, whether remote monitoring is supported, and what happens if you relocate mid-course (ask for your records and plan to be transferable).
  • Sort gum health first — untreated gum disease and orthodontics don’t mix; see our guide to gum treatment and deep cleaning in China.
  • Confirm English for the planning conversation — consent here is about years of your face; a chair-side interpreter is the minimum for a real discussion.

FAQ

How much does Invisalign cost in China? Clear-aligner courses in China are commonly reported at roughly ¥15,000–¥40,000 all-in, with the global Invisalign brand toward the upper end and domestic brands below it. Among our Shanghai partner clinics, SmilesMore aligners were listed from around ¥19,958 and entry-level clear aligner courses from around ¥3,360 (promotional, case-dependent). Always get a written full-course quote after a scan.

Are domestic Chinese aligner brands any good? China has a large domestic clear-aligner industry — Angelalign (时代天使) is the best-known brand, and others such as SmilesMore are widely offered. The technology concept is the same as Invisalign’s; what differs is price, track record and lab support. In practice the treatment plan and the orthodontist matter more than the brand on the box.

Can I do orthodontic treatment in China if I don’t live there? Only with a realistic plan. Treatment runs months to years with periodic in-person reviews, so it suits residents and frequent visitors best. Aligners travel better than fixed braces — clinics can dispense several sets at once and some offer remote monitoring — but you cannot complete a course on a single trip.

Do adults get braces in China? Yes — adult orthodontics is common and openly marketed in Chinese cities, and clinics in tier-1 cities treat adult cases routinely with aligners, ceramic braces and conventional fixed braces.

Are traditional braces cheaper than aligners in China? Generally yes. Conventional metal fixed braces are commonly reported below clear-aligner pricing, with ceramic and lingual (behind-the-teeth) braces costing more. The trade-off is aesthetics and more frequent in-person adjustment visits.

Does insurance cover orthodontics in China? China’s public insurance (医保) does not cover cosmetic orthodontics, and most foreigners are not enrolled anyway. Some international or dental insurance plans include orthodontic benefits with limits — check your policy, and keep an itemised fapiao and records for any claim.
