If you’re missing teeth and implants are off the table — for budget, medical or timeline reasons — China is a strong place to solve it the traditional way: dentures and bridges at a fraction of Western prices, typically completed in two to five visits inside a one-to-two-week trip, with no surgery and no months-long healing gap. This guide covers the non-implant options: who they suit, what they cost, the visit-by-visit process, and how they compare with the implant route. It deliberately complements two other guides — the dental implants pillar for single-tooth implants, and our All-on-4 guide for fixed full-arch solutions — so you can compare all three honestly. None of this is medical advice; only a dentist who has examined you can say which options your mouth supports.

What the non-implant options are — and who they’re for

  • Partial denture — a removable plate replacing some teeth, anchored to the ones you keep. Comes in budget acrylic, more comfortable flexible materials, and metal-framework (cobalt-chrome) versions that are slimmer and more stable.
  • Complete (full) denture — a removable full arch, upper or lower, for mouths with no remaining teeth on that arch.
  • Fixed bridge — not a denture at all: the teeth either side of a small gap are crowned, with a false tooth suspended between. Fixed in place, no surgery, priced per crown unit — the crown economics from our crowns and veneers guide apply directly.

Who this suits: people who want teeth replaced without surgery, on a modest budget, or quickly on one trip; people whose bone or health rules implants out; and people who want a working interim solution while deciding on implants later. Untreated gum disease has to be sorted first — loose foundations sink every option; see our gum treatment guide.

What dentures and bridges cost in China

Prices vary more with material tier than any other factor, and advertised entry prices usually mean basic acrylic. The figures below are reported reference ranges, not quotes — always get an itemised written quote naming the material:

OptionReported range in China
Acrylic partial denturefrom a few hundred to a few thousand yuan
Flexible partial dentureabove acrylic — mid-range
Metal-framework (cobalt-chrome) partialcommonly low-to-mid thousands of yuan
Complete denture (per arch)commonly low-to-mid thousands; premium materials above
Fixed bridgeper crown unit, ~¥1,500–¥5,000 each — a 3-unit bridge = 3 units

Two honest notes on these numbers. First, the spread is wide because “denture” covers everything from a basic acrylic plate to precision-milled premium work — the material line on the quote is the price. Second, China’s advantage here is real but strongest at the mid and premium tiers, where the same lab work costs dramatically less than Western equivalents. City and clinic tier move prices as everywhere — our Shanghai and Guangzhou guides cover the tiers.

The process — one of the most single-trip-friendly treatments

  1. Examination and options talk — remaining teeth, gums and bone assessed; options laid out with trade-offs.
  2. Impressions — conventional or digital scans; for bridges, the neighbouring teeth are prepared and temporaries fitted.
  3. Try-in (full dentures) — a wax version checks fit, bite and appearance before the final is made. Don’t skip this stage; it’s where problems are cheap to fix.
  4. Fitting — the finished denture or bridge is placed and adjusted.
  5. Adjustment visit(s) — new dentures almost always need at least one tweak in the first days. Sore spots are normal and fixable; suffering silently until your flight is not a plan.

The travel maths: commonly 2–5 visits over 1–2 weeks — one trip, thanks to fast local lab turnaround. That’s the sharpest practical contrast with implants (two trips months apart) and All-on-4 (the same two-trip pattern). Build the adjustment visit into your stay, and agree before you leave how a future reline — needed as gums and bone slowly change shape — will be handled at home or on a return visit.

There’s no universally right answer — there’s the right answer for your mouth, budget and travel reality. A good dentist will walk you through all three without pushing the most expensive one; a clinic that quotes implants before examining you has skipped a step. For full-arch cases specifically, read the All-on-4 guide alongside this one — the fixed-vs-removable decision at full-mouth scale deserves both pages.

How to choose a clinic for dentures

  • Material named in writing — acrylic, flexible, cobalt-chrome, and which teeth (the false-teeth units also come in quality tiers).
  • A real try-in stage for full dentures, and a stated policy on included adjustments.
  • Ask about the lab — in-house or external, and turnaround time, since your trip depends on it.
  • Consent-level English — the options conversation (denture vs bridge vs implant) is exactly where an interpreter or English-speaking dentist earns their place; see the English-speaking dentist guide.
  • Paperwork — itemised fapiao and records for any insurance claim; coverage for major restorative work varies widely, so check your policy first — mechanics in our fapiao and reimbursement guide.

FAQ

How much do dentures cost in China? Reported reference ranges run from a few hundred to a few thousand yuan for a simple acrylic partial denture, with metal-framework partials and complete sets commonly in the low-to-mid thousands per arch and premium materials above that. A fixed bridge is priced per crown unit at roughly ¥1,500–¥5,000 each. Always get an itemised written quote — materials drive the price.

How many visits do dentures take in China? Commonly two to five visits over one to two weeks: examination, impressions, a try-in for full dentures, the fitting, and at least one adjustment. That makes dentures one of the most single-trip-friendly treatments in dental travel — but build the adjustment visit into your stay before flying.

Dentures or implants — which should I choose? Implants are fixed, preserve jawbone stimulation and chew more like natural teeth, but cost far more per tooth and need two trips months apart. Dentures are cheaper, faster and non-surgical, but are removable and need periodic relines. For full-mouth cases there is a middle path — implant-supported fixed arches — covered in our All-on-4 guide.

What is a dental bridge and when is it better than a denture? A bridge replaces one or a few missing teeth by crowning the neighbouring teeth and suspending a false tooth between them — fixed, no surgery, priced per crown unit. It suits small gaps with strong neighbouring teeth; its trade-off is that those neighbours must be prepared for crowns.

Are dentures made in China good quality? China manufactures dental prosthetics for much of the world, and city clinics turn dentures around quickly through large local labs. Quality tracks the clinic and the material tier you choose, not geography — vet the clinic, confirm the material in writing, and expect a proper try-in stage for full dentures.

Will insurance cover dentures in China? Replacing missing teeth is often classed as major or restorative dental work — some international and dental policies cover a portion, many exclude it, so check yours first. Pay the clinic, keep an itemised fapiao and English records for any claim. China’s public insurance requires local enrolment most foreigners don’t have.
